Do solar panels need to be cleaned?

To ensure the maximum possible efficiency of your solar panels it is important for panels to be kept as clean as possible. Most solar panels have a hydrophobic coating and are advertised as being "Self-Cleaning".

The hydrophobic coating helps water droplets run off the panels taking any dust or loose dirt away with it.

Whilst self cleaning panels are great they cannot stop dirt from accumulating on the panels. This dirt can have a significant effect on the power output of the panels and can actually cause a reduction of more than 50%

We would recommend having panels cleaned every few years or when you can visible see that they are dirty of have noticed a reduction in power output.

When cleaning the panels it is important not to use any abrasive materials as these can damage the surface of the panels. High pressure hoses should also not be used, the solar cells within the panels are incredible delicate and can be easily damaged.

The cost of cleaning panels can vary depending on the property, some systems can be cleaned using telescopic poles from ground level however some systems will require scaffolding to be erected to allow safe access. If you are interested in having your panels cleaned please get in touch for a quotation tailored to your specific installation
